Antique Victorian Sinumbra oil parlor lamp Item # 3568 Antique Victorian Sinumbra oil parlor lamp. This term originates from the Latin sine umbra meaning "without shadow". Sinumbra lamps do not cast shadows because their reservoirs are located away from the flame. This form of lighting did not develop until after 1840. This "Sinumbra lamp", with its ornate relief, was probably made around the date engraved on the Newell burner, 1853 or 1858. Earlier sinumbra lamps featured straight fluted columns and less ornamentation.
